The Shame of a Tip of a Craft Room

I stood in the door way next to tears, “where do I start?” “Should I just give it all up as a bad job?”.

I felt thoroughly ashamed of the whole room, it needs organising, so much stuff, so much unused, more card than a craft shop, more ribbon than a haberdashery, something drastic needs doing.

I know, it’s my job, I know it’s my fault no-one else to blame. Standing at the doorway I just wanted to give it all up.

So I figure to get you to understand I need to give you all a visual, if nothing else it will shame me into sorting out this dreadful mess.

I hope you are all sitting down and ready for the shock.

make sure you view this as a slide show to get the full impact of what I am faced with.

So I managed to get nearly 1 unit sorted with my card stock and here it is, I need another 2 to 3 shelves of card adding to this.

1st tidy unit

Good luck with your organization project, Jak! I think you have a lot of fab storage ideas under there! I came to the same conclusion about my messy craft area over the holidays and I will be working on it over the next couple of weeks. Thanks for sharing!

I cleaned mine all up before Christmas. I had to, as I needed one of my tables for the extra people coming to dinner. (15 in total). What really helped, though it really sucked, was that I lost my internet due to the storm. Left me with empty time that I had to fill...wasn't much fun but at least it's done now.

When did you sneak into my craft room and take pics??? (actually, yours looks much better than mine!) I know exactly what you mean, where to start? This Christmas I brought what I needed downstairs & made my cards on the kitchen table since there's no room to work up there. I have been working on it but you'd never know to look at it! Just do something, anything and then do something else, etc, etc. Sooner or later it will be clean (for a minute or two)

Good luck Jak, it is obvious that you have had a very busy year and not been able to get it tidy. Do a bit at a time and before you know it it will be tidy again. Must say I love your storage.

Yes that looks all too familiar!!!! At least you had some areas which still looked tidy, not like mine! I started to sort out some stuff yesterday but the the family needed to be fed, the house needed cleaning etc etc. if I didn't have to do these other things I would have a tidy Craft room, or would I? Good luck! Love Carolyn x

Aaaaargh I don't do messy. Must admit mine is always tidy, I was just born that way, but. I have to agree that you have too much of some things. All that card for starers which now looks lovely and tidy. Time for a clearout definitely and get it lovely and tidy to encourage you to work in it. Good luck xx

I am one of those people who can't work or get inspired unless I have lots of things out and around me. I'm sure your room is the sign of a creative person at work and even if you sort and tidy it, it won't stay that way for long.
Wow though Jak, you do have lots and lots of stash! I'd be happy just looking through it and not moving anything!
Happy sorting!

Disgraceful!!!!! But we are all the same and you will feel so much better when it is done. Have fun, I know I do when I have a good tidy up. xxxxx

You sure do have a lot of stuff, but don´t feel bad or ashamed, as I´m very sure, we all have it the same, no matter, what people say, cause noone can create, without messing with stuff, and I´ll risk to say if people say they don´t, they´re not completely true, cause if there´s no mess at all, they haven´t done anything, so this just proof, that you´ve done a lot of work, and that´s what we all get lots of inspiration from all the time, so please keep on with that. But maybe take a little while a bit more often to tidy things up a bit, so it´ll be easier to find what you need. I normally always take some time to sosrt out and tidy every time, I´ve finished a project, so it´s almost sorted, whenever I start on a new project, but it doesn´t take long before it´s a mess again thoug, and I don´t feel ashamed of that at all, casue I can´t sort while I´m working. LOL.
Maybe that could be your resolution for the new year??
Have a HAppy New Year and hope we all will get the best year ever here in 2014.

I thought I was the only person to work in an 8" square space on my desk. I start out with a clearish desk and just don't know what happens to the space. Every now and then I have a clear out and give "extras" to my local Girl Guides. They love it!!

I could make you feel better about yours. I've given up on one room 'cos I can't get in there properly, the room that's supposed to be my craft room. I'm now taking over another and all I've got is stacked boxes. Can't craft as I can't get to anything and no space to craft in. You've nothing to worry about Jak, from what you've shown here :)

Well youve made a start and Im sure youll get there ive no where near as much as you but mines still a mess lol. Good Luck

Well dear Jak, I'm envious of your craft room and all your goodies, I would love to come and craft with you even in the so called untidy room, it looks amazing to me. I have to keep things out or I forget to use them!!! Not sure if that is age or me being naturally forgetful!!! Just enjoy what you have and stop worrying about what it looks like...

Mines was worse until I moved house, that forced me to sort it once and for all. I now have my very own craft room. I hardly crafted before as couldn't face the mess.

Ooh can I come and play? How wonderful to have all that lovely stash. I think you are doing very well especially considering how much work you do to inspire us all. I have no craft room and almost every room in our tiny house has crafty bits in it. I can't get inspired unless I can see my stash. If I put it away I spend hours trying to find things. My New Years resolution will be I MUST NOT BUY ANOTHER PIECE OF CARD no matter how beautiful , until I have used up what I have already. I have just tried to tidy my arty, painty cupboard and now have 2 washing up bowls full and no space in the kitchen to cook dinner!
Carry on with the good work

Hey Jak,
Ian still in that same place! I started early this Fall, got interrupted several times, so am still working on it...the thing with me is that my studio is shared with 2 sewing machines and a computer all on a 6.5ft table. I got all of these new storage shelving units which I love, but don't know where to put the pile that's left. Good thing nobody else HAS to get into this room. Have fun a d good luck!

I so know where you're coming from and I wish I'd taken photo's of my disaster zone before I hit it yesterday! you're looks so tidy compared to mine - I didn't even have any desk space clear and I have three desks, lol! I spent the whole day yesterday sorting and clearing and then spent Jak and I think we should both have a New Years resolution to clear up after we've finished crafting (it won't happen)!

You should join us on a WOYWW day and then you would find that your 'Workdesk' is perfectly good, well used, enjoyed and loved.
Thanks for sharing and I think you've made a really good start with that paper!
Wishing you lots of strength to carry on tidying!!!!

You know something Jak your not alone about a messy craft room...
I'm changing rooms at this moment so I have craft items and cabinet all over the house...talk about having a mess...then when I do get into the new area for the craft room I need to change thing around and be more neater and put my crafts item away in there proper place..
So just take one a day at a time and enjoy your place once again...
When you are finish doing your room I hope you will show us how it turned out...

Don't give up Jak... Ive just spent the best part of a month organising and decluttering my space as it was getting me so down. So much stuff and not enough hours in the day was a little overwhelming to say the least. I donated a lot of card and old bit's I'll never use to the local church group, donated handmade cards i just can't get into the boxes to cancer research and I've a pile to photograph and sell on my blog.... I feel so much better now... remember you can do it!!

Jak, your room is not half as bad as mine. You know that creative mess is better than tidy idleness. It's always the paper that I can't get a handle on. Do you store by color, manufacturer, or season. I really admire the job you have done so far.

J said...

Don't do it!! I tidied my craft room and now I can't find anything, and I am not comfortable. *sniff* I expect I will get used to it, but right now my mojo has completely freaked out and gone on holiday so it might be tidy, but none of it is being used!!!

It looks as though it was organized and then you may not have put things back after the last few projects.

It does not look too bad to me.My craft room used to get bad but I could find things but sad to say after a clear up I had problems finding things. I have had to move to a much smaller flat now and I have an alcove to keep things in so have to clear things up every time I make a card. I know what I would rather have

Hi Jak, all I can say is yours looks tidier than mine. I wouldn't even show pics of it. I would like a crafty fairy to come & sort it out for me. Ann (France)
